We are a relatively new Fire Department compared to some in the area. We came into being in 1996, when a real need arose. None of the valley residences outside the Sumpter City Limits were offered any type of fire or medical protection. We formed the Powder River Rural Fire Protection District to fill that void. There are five elected Directors who make up the fire board, who set policy and govern the department. We have a Fire Chief, Asst. Chief, Operations / Training Officer, EMS Coordinator, Firefighters, EMS Medical Team, and Support personnel who are all volunteers. These dedicated volunteers give their time freely to do the hard work and state certified training required to protect lives and property in the district. Volunteers participate in numerous hours of training each year. Training consists of class room instruction as well as practical instruction with local burn-to-learn structure fires using hands-on fire fighting techniques. The Medical Response Team members are certified with current First Responder or Emergency Medical Technician training and respond to all emergency medical calls in our district. A registered nurse heads the medical team.
We call this Mosquito our mascot. Those of you who live along the dredge rock piles in the valley can attest that we live with them all summer long, so, we put a few of the big one's to work. |
